A Little About Carla Hughes
Carla Hughes is a local dancer and choreographer, specializing in Jazz and Hip Hop dance. Carla has danced professionally as a member of Physical Theater Project ? a company which also gave her the opportunity to teach, stage and rehearse choreography. Since her work with that company, Carla has continued to blend dance as her personal art form with her passion for teaching, and for promoting dance to the community. Her own professional company, SheWorks Dance Theatre, creates and performs dances expressing issues ?pertinent to women, such as: love, body image, spirituality and individuality.? Carla creates her own solo work, including the recent Feeling Good (Michael Buble), Hot & Taught (Nina Simone) and Motherless Child (John Legend). ?It has always been a personal goal of mine,? she says, ?to give back to my community in any way possible using my talent for dance.? Over the past 18 years, Carla has done exactly that ? teaching dance and choreography in many institutions in Erie, including Collegiate Academy, Central High School, the Erie Dance Conservatory, Little Dance Studio, and Erie Bayfront Dance. In these positions, she regularly teaches beginning to advanced levels of Jazz and Modern dance, gives lectures, coordinates and choreographs performances, develops dance curricula, directs rehearsals, and choreographs stage productions and musicals. ?I feel like the voice inside my head is finally being heard and I?m ready to share the inspiration behind that voice with others.? Carla has an MFA in Performance & Dance Education from Ohio State University and a BA in Dance from Point Park University in Pittsburgh, PA.
