A Little About Lora Homan Zill
Lora Zill (M.A. Gannon University, B.A. Allegheny College) is a teaching artist with the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts. She leads residencies in public schools and community centers and speaks at writer, artist, and educator conferences across the nation. Lora also teaches at Gannon University and is a faculty member in Allegheny College's arts immersion program for gifted students. Her award winning poetry and nonfiction have been published widely and she also edits and publishes a poetry journal, Time Of Singing, now in its 44th volume. Lora's professional training is as a poet and writer, but she is also a serious art glass and mosaic hobbyist as well as a musician. Lora grew up in the coal mining area of central Pennsylvania, the oldest of five children, wandering the woods and landscapes around her small town. She still roams the outdoors by kayaking rivers and lakes in western and central Pennsylvania, sailing, hiking, and bike riding. Her love for nature is reflected in her writing and glass mosaics and her blue collar roots spurred her appreciation of the discipline learned through craft.
Mission Statement
My goal in my personal artistic expression and teaching students is to explore what each artist can achieve through their creative expression. I believe that an artist doesn't begin with self expression. You have to learn your craft so you can express yourself through it. For example, once you learn poetic techniques, then you express yourself through the art form of poetry. Once you learn how to cut and work with glass and tiles then you can create beautiful art glass and tile works of art. The discipline frees you to discover what you want to say and gives you the means to say it. The art challenges you to tap into and trust your natural intuition and creative instincts. You need both art and craft to explore worlds--internal and external.
