Artist Statement

Tom Noyes is a fiction writer, and he teaches creative writing and literature.

History/Biography

 

Tom Noyes was the Erie Arts & Culture Established Artist Fellow in 2018. His novel, The Substance of Things Hoped For, will appear with Slant Books in 2021. He is the author of three story collections: Behold Faith and Other Stories (Dufour 2002), short-listed for Stanford Libraries’ William Saroyan Award; Spooky Action at a Distance and Other Stories (Dufour 2008); and Come by Here: A Novella and Stories (2014), winner of the Autumn House Press Fiction Prize and the Independent Press Awards’ Gold Medal in Short Fiction. His books have garnered laudatory reviews in The New York Times Book Review, Kirkus Reviews, and various literary journals, and were named finalists for the Flannery O’Connor Award and AWP’s Grace Paley Prize. He currently directs the BFA in Creative Writing Program at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, where he also serves as Contributing Editor for the literary journal Lake Effect.
