Swan Lake - Mercyhurst University
The Mercyhurst University Dance Department and the Mercyhurst Civic Orchestra under the baton of Jonathan Moser are delighted to collaborate to bring the poignant tale of Odette, Odile, Siegfried, and the sorceress von Rothbart to life. Set to Tchaikovsky’s glittering and mournful score and condensed into two acts, Swan Lake is a magical story of love, power, and mistaken identities. The sorceress von Rothbart has cast a spell on Odette, King Lir's daughter, condemning her to live between the worlds of swans and humans for a thousand years, unless she finds her soulmate. She alights on a neighboring lake and Siegfried is entranced by her – but is it really Odette who appears at the ball later that night? This newly imagined production retains the iconic elements of the original choreography, but plays with the conventional expectations of classical ballet, and features three Mercyhurst dancers in the leading roles along with a special guest artist with ties to the extended Mercyhurst community.
