Celebrating Vision: The 2024 Lydia McCain Artist Fellowship Recipients

Erie Arts and Culture is thrilled to introduce the 2024 recipients of the Lydia McCain Artist Fellowship, an initiative designed to support and elevate the creative voices of Erie County artists. This prestigious program awards grants to three artists across different stages in their careers—Emerging, Mid-Career, and Established—offering them the financial flexibility to explore, create, and continue their artistic journey. The fellowship is a testament to our commitment to fostering the growth of local talent and ensuring that the arts remain a vital part of our community's cultural landscape.

This year, we celebrate three remarkable artists: Naphtali Fields-Forbes, Margo Wolfe, Ph.D., and Sue Amendolara, each exemplifying the spirit of creativity and innovation in their respective categories.

Naphtali Fields-Forbes: Emerging Artist Fellowship Recipient Naphtali Fields-Forbes skillfully intertwines the essence of community stories with broader themes of resilience and connection, creating a powerful dialogue that resonates both locally and universally. Her notable project, "The Cannery Project," explores the complexities of labor and environmental narratives in Alaska, bringing marginalized voices to the forefront. Naphtali's innovative approach transforms local tales into universal themes, demonstrating her commitment to social justice and community engagement. Her work not only compels but also becomes crucial for our times, bridging the gap between personal experience and collective understanding.

Margo Wolfe, Ph.D.: Mid-Career Artist Fellowship Recipient with a distinguished career in theater, Margo Wolfe’s direction and playwriting shed light on the depths of human experiences, with a particular focus on women's roles in contemporary society. Her acclaimed work, "Take My Hand," invites audiences on a journey of reflection through the intricacies of personal relationships. Margo's storytelling skillfully connects the personal with the universal, creating narratives that resonate across diverse audiences. Moreover, her commitment to mentoring the next generation ensures a lasting impact, nurturing a culture of creativity and innovation in the arts.

Sue Amendolara: Established Artist Fellowship Recipient Sue Amendolara has dedicated over three decades to mastering metalwork and jewelry design, crafting pieces that tell stories of life’s beauty and the nuances of the natural world. Her work, such as "Mending," delves into themes of loss and healing, blending personal memories with the universal experience of grief. Sue's pioneering use of materials and techniques redefines the boundaries of traditional metalwork, establishing her as a key figure in the field. Beyond her creations, Sue’s role as an educator and mentor has profoundly influenced the careers of emerging artists, solidifying her legacy within the artistic community.
